A tornado is defined as: a violently rotating column of air usually accompanied by a funnel-shaped downward extension of a cumulonimbus cloud and having a vortex several hundred yards in diameter whirling destructively at speeds of up to 300 miles per hour.
A tornado watch is issued by the National Weather Service when tornadoes are possible in your area. Remain alert for approaching storms. This is the time to remind family members where the safest p laces within your home are located and listen to the radio, KICKER 106 (105.7 FM) or LOCAL CORPUS CHRISTI television channels 3, 6 and 10 for further developments.
A tornado warning* is issued when a tornado has been sighted or if conditions are extremely favorable for one to develop. GO TO AN INTERIOR ROOM OR HALLWAY. STAY AWAY FROM WINDOWS AND PUT AS MANY WALLS BETWEEN YOU AND THE SEVERE WEATHER AS POSSIBLE.
(*At this time, the CITY OF THREE RIVERS WARNING SYSTEM will be activated.) The siren will have a continual wail for 3 minutes and may continuously be repeated, depending on the conditions of the weather so that all citizens can be notified. At this time take immediate cover in a home or building and find a predesignated shelter or an interior room.
**There is no “all clear” alert from the sirens. An “all clear” notification will be broadcasted on the radio**
Unless you need the police, fire or paramedics DO NOT tie up emergency phone lines. Also, 911 lines should be kept clear for people who really need police, fire or medical help fast. (Of course, if that includes you or someone near you, then you should call.)
**REMINDER –THE CITY TESTS THE SIREN EVERY FRIDAY AT 5:00 PM**
